Start Early: Preventing Wrinkles & Other Signs of Aging

For October, Eucerin hopes to educate people on the science behind skin aging and teach them how to take the necessary steps to prevent wrinkles and keep their skin looking healthy.

Here are a few facts and tips for Preventing Wrinkles & Other Signs of Aging:

1. First you should know what causes aging.

Skin is composed of two main layers, the epidermis and the dermis, with an insulating layer of fat below, called the subcutis. The dermis provides a network of collagen and other connective tissue elements that act like a scaffold that helps to maintain firm, flexible skin.  As you age, the collagen network is diminished and your dermis holds less water.

2.  Put it out, seriously.

Smoking affects more than just your lungs. It results in poor circulation, brown spots and wrinkles. Many of the 4,000 plus chemicals in tobacco smoke can damage our collagen and elastin when absorbed into the skin. These fibers give skin strength and elasticity, so when you’re smoking, you’re getting sags and wrinkles (and giving them to other people too!).

3.  Wear sunscreen.

We know you’ve heard this one before but we just can’t stress enough how important it is. Sunscreen is one of the most effective ways to help prevent wrinkles. UVA rays can penetrate into the dermis of the skin and are the primary cause of chronic sun-induced damage like premature skin aging. These rays (or ultraviolet light from tanning booths) are toxic to your skin. They increase production of free radicals and trigger cellular changes that can lead to wrinkles, brown spots, sunburn and dryness, or serious diseases like cancer.

4.  Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize.

Extreme changes in temperature and humidity can damage the skin. Cold and dry air saps water from our skin, leaving it dry and flaky while hot and humid air can lead to drier, unhealthy skin. Much of this climatic impact on skin can be prevented with moisturizing cream. Eucerin’s new Daily Skin Balance Skin Fortifying Body Lotion and Hand Crème strengthens the skin’s protective barrier against external elements and enhances skin health while providing 24 hour moisture.

5.  Eat Well.

You are what you eat. Limit your consumption of low-fiber, high-sugar carbohydrates (hold off on the ice cream, people). A diet composed of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, high-fiber grains, low-fat dairy and poly- and monounsaturated fats that is low in red meat, saturated fats and sugar, will help maintain your skin’s health.

Review: Eucerin Plus Smoothing Essentials

Over a month ago, I received Eucerin Plus Smoothing Essentials 16.9 oz lotion to try.  I must say, that I’ve used Eucerin’s Original Moisturizing Creme before, and this product is a great improvement. Not as thick, heavy or sticky as the Original Creme.

Claims:

Eucerin Smoothing Essentials has a breakthrough formula that feels luxurious without a greasy feeling, and it doesn’t compromise on long-lasting moisturization.  It dramatically improves the condition of your skin to keep it feeling smooth and moisturized all day.

  • Brand preferred by dermatologists
  • Optimally formulated with skin-conditioning moisturizers to easily glide over your skin
  • Strengthens skin’s barrier to improve its natural ability to retain moisture, while the gentle alpha hydroxy formula helps exfoliate and smooth skin
  • Clinically proven to moisturize for 24 hours
  • Fragrance-free and appropriate for sensitive skin

My thoughts:

Eucerin Plus Smoothing Essentials has the power of a body butter without the heavy feeling. It also absorbs into the skin really quickly.  It still moisturizes and doesn’t feel greasy.  Also, if you have an allergy to fragrance in products, this is also great because it is fragrance free.

My skin is dry, especially during the cold fall/winter months.  I definitely needed a lotion such as this one. This lotion has also been helpful currently in my pregnancy. My skin is stretching, and is sometimes dry, especially if I don’t drink enough water during the day.  This lotion really helps in keeping my skin moisturized, and relieves my skin from feeling tight. It leaves my skin feeling exceptionally soft and smooth.  So far, after using this lotion for over a month now, I have no stretch marks. None! Not even on my growing belly. I would show you a picture but, my stomach has gotten so hair. Mind you, I’ve never, ever had hair on my belly! Oh, the joys of pregnancy. Check my other blog, Beauty and the Bump for more about my pregnancy.

One Pump of Eucerin Plus

A little goes a long way.  Another thing I noticed when using this lotion.  One pump can coat an entire leg from foot to thigh.

I would definitely recommend this product to people who suffer from dry skin. Also, if you just love for your skin to feel smooth and soft, this is a product for you too!

Review: Peaches Hot House Guest (Chef) Review

This is a guest post by my sister, and chef, Shani Porter.  I introduced her and her cakes in the post titled, Experience Something SOulDelicious!

Two Sundays ago, I shared the most part of the day with Kim Porter. We visited my godson and his mom in queens and decided we definitely wanted to try a restaurant we’ve been hearing great things about in our neighborhood.  Unfortunately, ‘Peaches’ was closed until October 1st (the site has not been updated 2 weeks later and posts the same message.)  Luckily, there was a link on the sites homepage that directed me to ‘Peaches’ sister restaurant called ‘Peaches Hot House.’ I compared the menus, both touted similar recipes with a southern flare. Exactly what we were looking for! (I really wanted to try another shrimp and grits dish besides the one I recently tasted at Blue Smoke, which was pretty good.)

When we arrived, it was small, I mean tiny. Not intimate but, cluttered and bright! Once we were seated we waited, and waited, then waited some more before our order was taken.  We were offered water and asked by our waiter if we wanted any drinks. We got those pretty fast. Kim ordered a Half & Half, a mixture of Iced Tea and Lemonade I ordered… more water.

Smelling the food and watching all of the orders for the tables around us made our mouths water. We were extremely excited and couldn’t wait as our stomachs growled (you already know Kim is eating for two now.) Our waiter finally took our order. I requested the Stone Ground grits with Gulf Shrimp, White Wine, & Shiitake mushrooms, macaroni & cheese and grilled asparagus (I was hungry!). Kimmy decided to get Stone ground grits with Fried Shrimp. We tried to be patient but after 45 min., I began to peer into the kitchen to figure out what was up with our order. We begin to grow extremely impatient. We asked our waiter and he said it’s a busy night… Frankly, I think they need more cooks and Kimmy gladly offered my services for a free meal.

Shrimp with Grits

After an hour and fifteen minute wait, our food finally came! It was definitely worth it. The grits were so creamy, the sauce was extremely light and flavorful for a sauce with a heavy cream base, and the shrimp were cooked perfectly! It was so delicious and definitely not as rich as the Shrimp and Grits dish at Blue Smoke. I could eat this everyday, all day.

Fried Shrimp w/ Creamy Grits

The dessert was TDF!!! (To Die For!)

Would I suggest that you visit this restaurant if you’re ever in Brooklyn? Yes! Just be prepared for a long wait. The food is definitely cooked with love and the prices are reasonable. Maybe that’s why it took so long.  They’re open for lunch, dinner, and brunch (Saturday & Sunday).
