Giveaway: Laura Geller Fresh Brewed Beauty @QVC TSV for September 24, 2012

On September 19, 2012 I attended a beauty event at the Laura Geller Studio in New York City.  During the event, I had the opportunity to preview and test the newest cosmetics from Laura Geller, as well as receive a mini makeover at the studio using items from the new Laura Geller Fresh Baked Beauty.

I had an amazing time at this event.  It was nice running into Chastity Palmer from GlitterBuzzStyle.  Laura Geller is a riot!  She has so much personality.  If you watch her on QVC you know exactly what I am talking about.

Fall Skincare: Kim Porter’s Top Picks & Tips for Transitioning your Summer Skincare to Fall

As of Friday, September 21, 2012, we can bid our ‘goodbye’ to summer, and say ‘hello’ to fall.  Though we experience weather changes four times a year, the transition to the colder months always seems to be the hardest. What better way to usher in the new fall season than with a new product or two to help your skin look its best.   This fall embrace skincare products that will repair, smooth, and brighten your skin.  Here are my favorite fall (and winter) skincare products.

One of my favorite products to use year-round is bath/shower exfoliating gloves.  Just use these gloves with your favorite soap or body wash, and let your journey to soft, smooth skin begin.  The distinct textured fibers will deeply clean and revive dull and dry skin, leaving you feeling completely refreshed and smooth. These gloves can be found at any bath and body shop or drugstore, and they are affordable.  This pair is from Clean Logic Body Care.

Just because summer is over, and you can’t wear sandals, does not mean it is time to neglect your feet.  You use your feet daily – walking, standing, kicking etc.  it is nice to pamper them every once in a while.  With the cold weather, dry skin tends to become more of a problem in that area, which is why it is best to exfoliate that area either with a pumice stone, foot scrub or both! Typically, when giving myself at-home pedicures I do both.  I think it provides extra smoothness and cuts down on time.

Here are my picks!

Kiss My Face Organic Foot Scrub in Peppermint ($8.99) comes in a 4 fl oz squeeze tube.  I like packaging like this because you can easily get out all of the product even when it is down to the last drop.  Of course the scrub is gritty, it’s a scrub.   Thanks to ingredients like natural pumice and walnut shells, my feet are left feeling soft and dry skin-free.

Clean Logic Body Care Smoothing Pumice Stone ($1.99) along with the Kiss My Face Organic Foot Scrub will have your feet saying ‘Thank You’.  Make scrubbing with this smoothing pumice stone part of your regular, everyday shower routine to keep your toes in tip top shape at all times.

After you’re done ridding your feet of dry skin, be sure to apply a foot crème.  Kiss My Face has a pairing foot crème; however, I was not completely satisfied with it.  It moisturized my feet for a short period of time; I’ve had a better experience with other products.

If you were like me a year ago, and do not own a Clarisonic, the best way to exfoliate during the colder months is to use an oil-based scrub.  The summer sun and chlorine tend to leave the skin feeling dry and flaky. Oil-based scrubs are wonderful because they exfoliate and hydrate.  My favorite scrub, when I want to give my Clarisonic Mia a break is the Happy Face Foaming Scrub from Sugared Beauty.  It’s an all-natural, handmade scrub.  It leaves my skin feeling as soft as my daughter’s baby skin.  My skin doesn’t even feel dry or tight afterward. I let my sister use it and she stole it because she loved it so much.

Other Fall Skincare tips:

  • Switch from lotion to cream. As the air becomes drier, your skin needs a thicker moisturizer. Creams provide a stronger oily barrier, which means they both reduce water loss from the outer layer of skin and provide hydration to this layer of skin at the same time.
  • Protect your lips. Keep lips moisturized and kissably soft. Use a non-petroleum based lip balm for best results.  You can use a homemade sugar scrub to exfoliate them as well. Olive oil +
  • Invest in hand cream. Hands often become dry and cracked during fall and winter. Start moisturizing your hands now to ensure soft, supple hands all winter long.

What is your Fall Skincare routine?  Has it changed?

My Calgel Manicure for a wedding

I got another calgel manicure for my friends wedding.  My first one was done at the International Beauty Show in May 2010.  I did love it.  The reason it took me a long time to get another one was because at Sakura, and another salon that does it charged a lot of money, and the locations were too far.  My cousin told me about a place, Pure Nail Salon, she goes to.  It is closer, but still a bit out of the way. On her recommendation, amongst the many good reviews on Yelp.com I ended up going to Pure Nail.

For my next calgel manicure, I envisioned something fun, and not too plain like my first one was, but since this was for a wedding, I got what a nice light pink with some “bling”.  It isn’t too plain, but, I think it was appropriate enough.  Next time, I want something with more color and designs.

By no means is Pure Nail salon fancy.  If you do go, just keep that in mind.  It cost me $40 for my calgel manicure, which had gradation and an accent nail.  It has been a week since my manicure and it looks just as good as the day I got it done.  I would say it was money well spent.
