Sanitizing Your Makeup Made Simple

Blog reader & follower, Niki Tasha requested a post on How to Sanitize your Makeup When on a Makeup Job.

The products I use to sanitize makeup and brushes while doing makeup, and in between jobs are made by a brand called Beauty So Clean.  International Makeup Artist, Nancy Crosley developed the Beauty So Clean products out of concern that the makeup and tools she was using on her clients were becoming contaminated with bacteria while working on different clients throughout the day.   For many years, people have used alcohol to clean their makeup; however, alcohol dries out and damages most makeup products.

Beauty So Clean has three products to keep your makeup and tools bacteria free!  They are the Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist, Cosmetic Sanitizer Wipes, and the Conditioning Brush Cleaner.  I purchased all three of these products (in Pro Size) from Alcone Co either online or at The Makeup Show New York this past May.

I like all of the products.  It makes sanitizing my makeup so easy. Since I am anal about cleanliness; I clean my brushes almost immediately after use, I never use the same mascara wand twice, I don’t double dip into the products I use, I always use a spatula etc. Using these definitely takes the pain out of cleaning my makeup and brushes.

***Keeping your makeup and tools clean is important to prevent the spread of germs, breakouts, and other serious illness.

Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist Description – $24.99: Removes bacteria and germs on powder-based products: eyeshadows, blushers, pressed powder, bronzers, cream-based products: compact foundation, concealers, cream blush/eyeshadows. (It dries in a few seconds)

Cosmetic Sanitizer Wipe Description- $24.99: Removes bacteria and germs on lip-gloss, lipstick, lipgloss in a pot/tub, eye pencils, lip pencils and mascara wands.

Conditioning Brush Cleaner Description – $24.99: Gently cleans and conditions makeup brushes… safe for natural or synthetic bristles. (Cleans brushes well.  No eyeshadow residue left.  Brushes are left feeling soft)

Makeup Tips for Summer

I can’t stress it enough that in the summer, heavy foundations and powders are unnecessary.  The least amount of product on your skin is best.

Protecting your skin with a sunscreen and keeping it hydrated naturally with water, and an oil-free moisturizer is important during the hot & humid summer months, placing more emphasis on  healthy skin & not hiding behind makeup.   If your skin is clear & smooth enough, you can get away with wearing just a tinted moisturizer, concealer, bronzer (matte & cream bronzers are best) and blush, mascara, and a little lip gloss.  However, if you are oily, like myself, apply a mattifying primer prior to applying your makeup instead of using powder on top. Blotting sheets/paper are great to have too, especially to lessen makeup build-up.

In the summer you don’t want to forget your primers; that is your facial and eyelid primers.  In the heat, makeup tends to slide or melt off.  Primers will help keep your makeup from doing that, and lasting longer during the day.  Also, try using as many waterproof products as possible, such as paint pots for color on your lids; mascara & eyeliner to avoid raccoon eyes.
