Makeup Brushes & Uses Part II: Face Brushes

Earlier this week I posted Makeup Brushes & Uses Part I.  Just as you have makeup brushes specifically for your eye area, there are brushes that are used to apply makeup to your face.

Face brushes are used to apply foundation, powders, concealers, blush, contouring, and highlighters.  Below is a list of the different face brushes along with their uses.

Foundation Brush:  Flat shaped & long bristled, and tapered at the end.   Used to apply cream & liquid foundations.  I typically use a sponge instead since you end up using less product with a sponge (when wet).   I also use my foundation brush to apply my cream blushes.  Example: Sigma F60 Brush

Concealer Brush:  It’s narrow & firm, and tapered at the end.  Similar to the foundation brush, except smaller (in most cases) to ensure even application of concealer in smaller areas such as under the eyes.  It’s This brush allows your concealer to be concentrated on the area/blemish you’re trying to cover.  These work best with cream concealers (MAC Studio Finish Concealer or Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer). Example: Sigma F70 or F75

Powder Brush: Has a large, fluffy brush head.  This brush is used to apply powder products, such as foundation, loose setting powder, and blotting powder.  For the most natural application, buff the powder onto your face in a circular motion.  Example: Sigma F30

Blush Brush:  You can think of this brush as a smaller version of the powder brush.  The brush is either rounded or sloped/angled, which is perfect for contouring. Example: Sigma F10, F15, F40, F84

Stippling Brush:  This is sometimes referred to as a skunk brush since it’s a two-level, two-toned (black & white) brush.  It’s a blend of goat hair & synthetic fibers.  This brush is used for lightweight application of powder, liquid or cream products, to give you soft layers or add texture.  When used with foundation, it gives a airbrushed look.   If you’ve watched my video’s, you’ve seen that I use this brush to apply my supr bright/pigmented blush. to get a light touch of color & not look clownish.  Example: Sigma F50

Fan Brush: It’s in the shape of a fan.  They can be large, medium or small.  These brushes have several different uses, such as applying blush, blending, adding highlighter to the cheekbones, cleaning up (wisping away excess powder or fallout from eyeshadow under the eyes), blending (soften a dramatic look). Example: Make Up For Ever (MUFE) has several. I got mine from coastal scents.

Tapered Face Brush:  I don’t really use this brush too often, but when I do use it, I use it to apply loose setting powder in smaller areas like under my eyes to set my conceale r& blend it out.  It’s used the same way as a contouring brush would be, which is for sculpting & shaping.  and can be used to apply highlighters.  Example: Sigma F25 or F35

Kabuki Brush: This is a fat brush with a short flat head & stem.  The brush head can be round or flat.  The brush fibers should be soft.  This brush is used to apply powder based [mineral] foundation or powder, as well as blush and bronzers.  Buff the powder onto your skin in circular motion for best application. Example: Sigma F82

2) What skin type do you have? Combo oily

3) What is your current facial wash? Dove Beauty Bar (remove makeup), and Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser
4) Do you exfoliate? I exfoliate at least twice a week with a honey/aspirin mask (homemade), and I sometimes use the Proactiv Mask.
5) What brand do you use? see above

6) What moisturizer do you use? I use Cetaphil, MAC’s Oil Control Lotion, Clinique’s Moisture Surge, or Graftobian’s Oxyderm.  The one I use depends on whether or not I’m wearing makeup.

9) Do you or did you have acne prone skin? Nope not really. I use acne cleanser for prevention purposes.

MAKE UP

11) What foundation do you use? I very rarely use foundation (see my FAQ tab).  When I do, I use Graftobian’s HD, MUFE HD, MUFE Face & body.

16) What brand of mascara do you use? Revlon, MAC, and YSL (I’ll get back to you on the names)

17) Sephora or Mac? I only like MAC for their E/S, MSF Natural, and lip products.   Other than that, I’d venture to Sephora. I don’t because Ihave a discount for most of the brands they carry, so I just order from the brand itself.
18) Do you have a Mac Pro card? Yes! Worth it especially if you’re an MUA. Makeup is expensive.  I have other Pro cards as well.

19) What makeup tools do you use in makeup application? Brushes, and sponges. A Mixture of MAC, Sigma, crown, and Coastal Scents.

My Current Daily Skincare Routine

Over a month  ago I announced in this post that I started using the Dove Beauty Bar to cleanse my face.  It works well.  I was using proactiv before.  Proactiv works for a while until your skin gets used to it, then it no longer works.

Earlier this month I went to my dermatologist, Dr. Marc Avram.  He told me that the dove is good and I should continue to use it, and so is the moisturizer (cetaphil) I am using.   He suggested Clean & Clear’s Continuous Control Acne Cleanser to help prevent breakouts since it has the highest percentage of benzoyl peroxide (10%) in it compared to other over the counter (OTC) acne cleansers.   It used to be prescription ( I didn’t know).

I picked up the Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser from Walgreen’s for $6.08, and I’ve been using it ever since, and it works great!

This is what I do from start to finish.

When I have makeup on I lather up the Dove in my hand & smooth it over my face then rinse, if not I start straight off with the Clean & Clear.

1.  Wash my face with the Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser

2. Apply EM Gel (prescription only) trying it for 6 weeks to see what happens. It’s beenhelping control my oil though.

3.  Apply my cetaphil moisturizer (skipping my t-zone since that’s where I’m most oily).  Make sure you blot off any excess moisturizer with a tissue especially if you tend to be oily.

4. Apply MAC’s oil Control Lotion to my t-zone

5.  Apply MAC’s Moisture Lush Eye Cream under my eyes

That’s it!  I repeat the same at night. Nothing too serious or extravagant about how I wash my face.

I use a mask (aspirin & honey (now) before my proactiv mask) at least two times a week. I almost always use a mask before I go out for an event & I’m wearing makeup. I just think the makeup applies better.

Updates: New Tutorials & Product Reviews

Over the last few days, I did several youtube video’s.  They are as follows:

Rihanna’s  Look on the cover of NME Magazine  – On the cover of NME Magazine, Rihanna had  a semi-nude eye with a pop of blue eyeshadow on the outer third of her lid.  Her lips were a nice pink. She had some berry-ish contouring on her cheeks as well.

Eve Pearl Foundation, Salmon Concealer, and Dual Pressed Powder Tutorial/Review.  I apply all of the above mentioned Eve Pearl products and provide my thoughts on it.  Overall, I think the products are good; the concealer is very creamy & provides great coverage, as does the foundation.  The foundation did have a crayon-like smell to it at first. This product is definitely not for beginners since it takes some skill to find your right color by mixing each color together.

How I Prep my Oily Skin for Foundation Application (applying MUFE’s HD Foundation in #173 & #177). CLICK HERE for tutorial.  I did a post about this a few weeks ago (CLICK HERE) to read it.

Spring/Summer Makeup Tutorial: Neutral Look with a POP of Orange – (CLICK HERE) for tutorial.  Many of you asked to see more neutral (wearable looks). This look I created is perfect for spring or summer.  It also gives the impression of a tan or bronzish glow.   I also showed you what the Orange NYX Blush with MAC’s format & Golden Bronze Iridescent Powder looks like.
