QVC Beauty Breakfast (Picture Heavy)

Friday, March 4, 2011 I had the opportunity to attend QVC‘s Beauty Breakfast, which was held at Milk Studios in NYC.  This event was heaven for all cosmetic and beauty mavens out there.  Through this event QVC gave us beauty bloggers, and beauty professionals the chance to have an up-close and personal look at the beauty brands they represent and sell on QVC.   We also had the rare opportunity to meet the genius individuals behind beauty and cosmetic top-sellers, such as Mally Roncal of Mally Beauty, Chaz Dean of Wen Hair and Body Care, model Josie Maran of Josie Maran Cosmetics, Dennis Simioni of Ojon Hair care and more.

To be around so many beauty products can be a bit intimidating, and overwhelming at times, but, I jumped right in and started at the booths I was least familiar with just to get more background on the products they produce.  With that said, I cautiously went over to the Wen booth, and Chaz’s sister thoroughly talked about the Wen product line and tested out products on me.  Chaz Dean himself also tested out the Wen Replenishing Mist ($27/ 6 fl oz.) on my face and hair, and WOW!  You know how African American women are with their hair.  My hair did not revert; my hair actually felt softer and had more shine.  The mist also works well in setting makeup, and refreshing your skin on a warm day or after the gym. Not to mention, it also made my hair smell yummy!

The highlight of my day was meeting Mally! She was SUPER nice!  She was funny too.  It was crazy because I had just read an article about her in one of the magazines I have, and who would have thought I’d meet her within a few days time? CRAZY!  I think I stayed at her booth for about 20 minutes.   Mally spoke about her Mally Beauty Cosmetic line, which has shades for women of color.  She also told us her favorite product from her line, the Poreless Face Defender ($40), which provides the benefits of a translucent powder without the powdery finish.  It has a smooth, silky and light feel with no residue.  She also told me about her past pregnancies, and rubbed my belly.  How could I refuse? She was just too sweet and funny.

I was also able to meet Dennis Simioni, owner and founder of Ojon Hair Products. he was really nice too.   He gave advice on how to care for my hair post-pregnancy since pregnant women sometimes lose their hair after they have their baby. He also talked about the new products to be released in the Ojon Swa+ Collection in October 2011

Besides knowledge about the brands and their products, I didn’t really expect to leave with anything; however, I received a ridiculously heavy bag with samples from each of the vendors at the QVC Beauty Breakfast. I’m so lucky! Besides the baby that I should be having any day now, I now have many new products to test out and review for you all. Please be patient with me.

Below are pictures of what I received in my bag.

I’ve already used WEN’s Conditioning Cleanser for my weekly washed. So far, it has left my hair feeling soft, light & fluffy, instead of dry.

What products would you like to see me review first?

Unfortunately, since I am pregnant, I am unable to review products containing retinol or the like.

Thank you to QVC & LaForce + Stevens for this amazing event!

Sephora Hot NOW! Event (Picture Heavy)

Last week Thursday, February 17, 2011 I attended the Sephora HOT NOW beauty event with HerGoodyBag, and ran into Felicia from ThisThatBeauty and Milly from BeautyLogicBlog.  Everyone, no matter the age or sex flock to Sephora because they are the leading destination for the latest trends and hottest products in beauty.  Now they are implementing a new monthly campaign featuring hand-picked beauty products that are HOT right NOW!

“The products featured each month will include the industry’s boldest product innovations, the coolest brand collaborations, and the most unique, under-the-radar discoveries found at Sephora.”

At the event we were able to look at all of the products featured for the months of March and April.  You can find, and purchase the HOT NOW beauty products for March right now on Sephora.com.  My favorite products from March’s HOT NOW are:

Innovator: Josie Maran’s Argan Matchmaker Serum Foundation ($42).  This is my favorite because it is a medium to full-coverage foundation that has Chameleon Pigments, that adjusts to your skintone.  It’s light weight as well; it almost feels like a tinted moisturizer, it’s so light. It comes in two different formulations, Light/Medium and Medium/Dark.  I think that a Dark/Darker would be nice to add to this line as well to account for the darker shade ladies.

Cool Collab: Tokidoki’s Soda Pop Palette ($49).  This fun, funky palette is inspired by sock hops and soda shops of the 50’s.  It features 12-different eyeshadows (matte, satin, shimmer), perfecto eyeliner, nail file, removable tokidoki pendant magnet with a sheet of Soda Shop inspired tokidoki characters, all in a collectible tin. The colors in the palette are highly pigmented, and are perfect for any skintone.  I also love the packaging. Look at the picture below and tell me it isn’t cute!

Cool Collab:  Sephora by OPI GLEE Collection ($9.50/ bottle or $24/6-piece kit).  The colors in this collection are HOT! “Hell to the No” (opaque, bright, royal purple with gold glitter) and “Slushied” (opaque, turquoise blue) are my absolute faves, especially since those two are my favorite colors.  They’re perfect for the spring too!  I also love the Chic Print appliques they’ve added too.

April’s  HOT NOW!

April’s HOT NOW products include the following:

Staying Power: Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray ($9 – $29).

Breakthrough Ingredient: Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum

Flawless Finish: Sephora Collections Advanced Brush Set ($65). These brushes are extremely soft! I’ve had Sephora brushes for my personal use since college, and they have yet to break.

Multi-tasker: Advanced Home Actives Brazilian Peel – glycolic peel ($78 for 4 treatments).  Maybe after I have the baby I will try this one.  One of the Sephora testers who’ve used this product, her skin looked AMAZING! It had such a nice glow.

Breakthrough Ingredient: Vitamin A rich Pequi Fruit in Couture Color’s Pequi Oil Treatment ($32).  This has a very nice tropical scent; think pina colada. The ladies raved about this product during the event.  They even said I’d drop my Morocan Oil for this.

Flawless Finish: Rita Hazan’s Root Concealer ($24).  It comes in four shades – Dark Brown/Black, Light Brown, Blonde and Red.  It is for all of you ladies who need to cover up your roots and/or grays.  It’s non transferrable, water and sweat resistant too!

Scent-sation: Jennifer Aniston perfume ($39-$70).  Love this scent! Ms. Aniston created this perfume “reminiscent of her beachy California days, floral evening, and nighttime summer bonfires…” What does it smell like? “It has top notes of citrus grove and rose water, middle notes of blooming jasmine, wild violets and amazon lily and base notes of sensual musk.”  I would definitely say it’s a light, sensual scent.  Perfect for the spring and warm weather coming up.

My Thoughts: I think the HOT NOW initiative is great for Sephora to do. especially for individuals who get overwhelmed by the many beauty choices Sephora has to offer.  I do think that the HOT NOW products should be offered at a discounted rate during that month.

What do you think of Sephora’s New Initiative?

Do you think these products are ‘HOT NOW’ Worthy?

Big thanks to Bold PR for the Invite

Review: Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion

Description (source):

A variety of external elements, like pollution and climate changes can weaken the skin’s protective barrier, affecting your skin’s health over time. Eucerin Daily Skin Balance — Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion ($9.99) helps balance skin’s natural pH level to enhance its natural defenses. Its patent-pending formula with provitamin B5, glycerin and a pH5 buffer provides all day moisturization while strengthening your skin’s protective barrier against external elements.

  • Enhances Skin Health
  • Strengthens Skin’s Protective Barrier
  • Fast Absorbing
  • Provides 24 Hour Moisturization
  • Lightly Fragranced

My Thoughts:

The product is relatively thin, and it spreads quickly and evenly.  Though it does spread over the skin quite easily, this lotion leaves behind an unpleasant sticky/greasy film.  There’s nothing I hate more than applying lotion and then feeling like I’ve got to go wash it all off in order to touch anything.  It didn’t even leave my skin feeling moisturized, just sticky.

Eucerin claims that the Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion is “lightly fragranced;” I disagree. The first thing I noticed about this lotion is the heavy perfume smell that lingers for some time.  The thing that keeps me from purchasing a moisturizer/lotion most are scents and this was a scent I just couldn’t get past.  Plus, when wearing an actual perfume this lotion would clash, and alter the scent of the perfume.

Another thing about this lotion is it started to break me out in little hives, and made me itch. No good!  I’m  not sure if it’s because of the scent or some other ingredient, but, I stopped using it after I noticed this was the root cause of the small rashes, and itchiness I was suffering on my body.

Do I recommend?

No.  If you are like me, and dislike highly fragranced lotions, and products that leave a sticky residue, I would not suggest you purchase this.

My favorite Eucerin product that actually works well in keeping my skin moisturized, dissolves quickly without the greasy/sticky film, and is unscented, is the Eucerin Plus Smoothing Essentials Lotion.

What brushes do you use?

This is a question I get asked often.  I do have some MAC brushes, however, the majority of my brushes are Sigma Makeup Brushes.  When I first began building my kit these were recommended to me based on the quality (very similar to MAC), and the affordability of them.
