Review: Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil – Remove Makeup with No Residue Left Behind

Disclosure:  Product provided for review consideration.  All opinions are my own and are 100% honest.

 Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil

Dermalogica is a renowned skincare brand, especially amongst the makeup artist community.  I was first introduced to the Dermalogica brand during my first attendance at The Makeup Show New York.  After hearing so many great things about the brand from veteran artists like James Vincent, Kevin James Bennet etc. I had to try it out.  I made my first Dermalogica purchase at The Makeup Show’s Holiday Pop-up Shop, which was their Cleansing system that contained the Special Cleansing Gel, Daily Microfoliant, Skin Smoothing Cream, and Multivitamin Power Firm, along with samples of the PreCleanse Oil.  Of what I received in the kit, the Daily Microfoliant was my favorite, along with the Precleanse Oil, which I instantly fell in-love with.

Description:

The Dermalogica PreCleanse oil is a lightweight Olive and Apricot Kernel-based cleansing oil, fortified with Kukui Nut, Borage Seed and Rice Bran oils, that gently liquefies sebum and oil-based debris from the skin’s surface. The hydrophilic (water-loving) formula enables PreCleanse and oil-based debris to be readily rinsed away without leaving behind any greasy residue.  Contains no artificial fragrance or color.

My thoughts:

The Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil has become a staple in my skincare routine, especially on days I wear makeup.  The best part of makeup is being creative and putting it on.  The worst part is taking off the makeup.  Not to sound like a corny infomercial, but, the PreCleanse Oil definitely makes the makeup removal part easier.

I like that I don’t have to use a separate eye makeup remover, I just rub the Dermalogica PreCleanse all over my dry face with dry hands, making sure I get every nook and cranny.  Then wet my hands and continue to massage it in.  Then rinse off.  Sometimes, instead of using a cleanser right after, I just use a cotton pad soaked with some of my Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe and Rose Water, to remove whatever is left.  Surprisingly, there’s no leftover residue.

Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil 2

I like that the Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil doesn’t leave my skin oily afterward, it’s actually just the opposite – soft, supple and clean.  It also has skin nourishing ingredients which are a plus.  If you’re an oily girl like me, and are familiar with the oil cleansing method, PreCleanse takes a page from that book.   Don’t get me wrong, it’s great for oily girls as well as other skin types, too!

There’s one thing I do not like about this product, and that’s the price.  As with many of the Dermalogica skincare products, it’s costly.  I’m talking about $37 for a 5.1 oz.  I use the Belle Butters Neutralizing Butter for Oily skin for the same purpose, and it costs $15 for 4 oz.  Granted, it’s not for all skin types, but it does the same job as the PreCleanse Oil, and a little goes a long way.  It all depends on how deep your pockets are, and how much you are willing to spend (or not) on your skincare.  If I weren’t on a budget, I’d buy the PreCleanse repeatedly, but, that’s not the case.

Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries Kit in Ligh Review Stephanie Louise ATB 01

PR SAMPLE

Do you love Tarte kits? I do! Tarte puts together some of the best value kits for me personally since they cater to all skin types & tones. I happen to be extremely fair so I really appreciate being able to find shades that match for me. The Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries Kit in Light contains 8 items including some brand new products to the line & specialty brushes. Each product in the kit was included by Tarte to “defy the boundaries of conventional makeup” & is said to be for “anyone looking for a complete collection of everyday beauty essentials”.  That’s a big promise!

The Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries Kit in Light contains a BB tinted treatment primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30, BB tinted undereye corrector (exclusive to QVC until 11/30/13), Lights, Camera, Flashes! mascara in black, Lights, Camera, Lashes! waterproof inner rim liner in black, LipSurgence power pigment in Awakening, a rose pink (exclusive to QVC until 11/30/13), Undereye brush, Special edition complexion brush (exclusive to QVC until 11/30/13), & a very  nice sized makeup bag.

The bag itself has a really nice chevron pattern- not too much one season although definitely appropriate for fall! It is also much larger than I had expected…I have clutches smaller than this! I love that it is a bigger size because sometimes you just need a bag that can fit more for traveling. This would also be a perfect gift, plenty of room!

Tarte BB Tinted Treatment Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30– I thought this was going to be more of a traditional BB cream but instead it is truly a slightly tinted primer. This helped flow nicely over the skin & filled in pores before concealer. After wearing this under foundation I really appreciated it more. Worn on its own it isn’t much coverage but does provide SPF while beautifying the skin which I appreciate. The fair shade is definitely what my skin needed! You can apply with the included brush (reviewed below) or with your fingertips.

Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries Fair Review Stephanie Louise ATB 010

Tarte BB Tinted Undereye Corrector– I was super excited about this, I’m so fair that many undereye correctors just change the darkness to an off color rather than neutralizing. This is a creamy product & definitely peach toned which is meant to correct. This might be a tad too peach for my pale skin but it definitely neutralized my darkness without accentuating dryness under the eyes. This concealer is extremely creamy which makes it easy to blend but I do recommend topping it with an ultra-light dusting of setting powder so it won’t crease. (exclusive to QVC until 11/30/13)

Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes! Mascara in Black– This is a wonderful mascara that is a bit on the dry side so it builds up volume & length with very little effort. It is also a very pigmented black shade which my blonde lashes appreciate! I don’t have issues with smudging or flaking & how cute is this packaging?

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! Waterproof Inner Rim Liner in Black– This is an ultra creamy pencil that glides on the waterline with ease. I have allergy eyes so trying something meant specifically for the inner rim was a treat! The pigment is great, ultra black. This stayed on my better on my upper eye rim than on the bottom but performed better than most shades. This also seemed to be a tad easier to remove than move waterproof pencils.

Tarte LipSurgence Power Pigment in Awakening- Described as a rose pink this is a brand new lip product from Tarte. I love Tarte lip products so I was very excited for this one! The shade is very creamy & more pigmented than their Lip Surgence pencils. You have a twist up lip crayon so it doesn’t need sharpening. I really liked the finish on this, more creamy but not shiny. It is somewhere between a matte & natural satin maybe? This had a really nice wear time & although I didn’t find it particularly moisturizing it also wasn’t uncomfortable on the lips. (exclusive to QVC until 11/30/13)

Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries Kit in LighConcealer Brush 01
Tarte Undereye Brush– This is a brilliant little double sided brush! You are supposed to use the lighter side to apply the concealer under the eyes & the darker side to blend out. This makes apply concealer & blending almost one step which saves time. Plus…the handles are really cute on these brushes!

Foundation Double Ended Brush Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries 01

Tarte Special Edition Complexion Brush– While most people don’t love double ended brushes I actually do. They save me time because I just flip it right over & continue on my perfect skin path! One side has a synthetic pointed head which makes applying to specific areas a breeze while the other side is a synthetic flat top for buffing.  Simple! (exclusive to QVC until 11/30/13)

I wanted to show a simple look using all of the products in this kit for a day of running errands.  The only products I added from my own stash were eyeshadow, blush, finishing powder, brow products, & a spot concealer which I listed below.

Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries Kit in Light Face
On my eyes you’ll find the Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! Waterproof Inner Rim Liner in Black & Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes! Mascara in Black both from this kit. I also added my own Tarte eyeshadows:  Cloud 9 on the browbone, Totally Taupe along the lid, & Brilliant Bronze in the crease for a simple look.

Tarte Beauty Without Boundaries Kit in Light Eyes
On my face I used the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 in Fair & Tarte BB Tinted Undereye Corrector in Light. I also added my Tarte Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder a touch under my eyes to set the concealer, a spot concealer, my brow products, & my Tarte Amazonian Blush in Magic. The lip product is the Tarte LipSurgence Power Pigment in Awakening on its own. The photo on the right is pre-additional concealer, finishing powder, & lip product & on the right is my final look.

Overall, I’m quite happy with this look! I don’t this this kit is everything you need for a full look but on a natural day it wouldn’t need much additional! I think these products also work really well together to create a look & the styling of the brush handles & the bag is on trend while still be unique. I think this set is a great value!  You can sign up here for first access when the set becomes available on QVC.

Get into the Halloween Spirit with LUSH Cosmetics

Disclosure: Information provided by the company or its PR for informational purposes. Photos courtesy of LUSH Cosmetics.

One of my favorite  skincare lines that just so happened to be vegan, LUSH Cosmetics has some exciting things brewing for this Halloween season.  With Halloween being 31 days away, LUSH is bringing you newbies, some oldies but goodies, as well as some online only specials.

Creatures of the Baaaath!

This Halloween, LUSH brings three new spooky limited edition Halloween inventions, which include two new bubble bars ($5.95), and a bath bomb ($4.95).

 Pumpkin

Pumkin Bubble Bar – A bubble bar with a traditional Halloween twist!  Fragranced like LUSH’s Figs and Leaves soap, this is sure to give you the feeling of walking down a dark street as leaves whirl around you in the howling wind!  A black licorice stem tops off this spooktacular bar!

Lord of Misrule LUSH Cosmetics

Lord of Misrule Bubble Bar – This bubble bar features the world’s first Fair Trade vanilla absolute, Lord of Misrule’s fragrance is layered with a spicy black pepper oil and soothing patchouli.  This slow-dissolving Bath Bomb reveals a wine-colored center.  The popping candy surprise inside, represents the party atmosphere during his rule over a period of winter merriment.  This, due to the spiciness and patchouli, is one I’m looking forward to try the most. Maybe it will end up in my basket when I’m out trick-or-treating.

Sootball Bath Bomb – This bath bomb just sounds dirty! It’s inspired by a character from the Japanese Anime movie “Spirited Away”, this is an all new bath bomb shape, sprayed black and topped with spooky, googly eyes… BOO!… Scared? Sootball is fragranced with Tonka absolute, organic sandalwood oil and benoin to warn, and soothe skin, reduce stress, and drive away evil spirits.  This one is definitely great for using after those long stressful days at work or a hard evening of Halloween partying and fun.

Fizz, Bubble, Mischief and Trouble with year round favorites like

LUSH Cosmetics Ceridwens Cauldren Halloween

Ceridwen’s Cauldron Bath Melt ($8.45) –  This bath melt will soften dehydrated skin, and soothe sensitive irritated skin thanks to ingredients like oats, lavender, sandalwood, cocoa butter and walnut oil.

Enchanter LUSH Cosmetics Halloween

Enchanter Bath Bomb ($6.25 – Make some magic in the bath on Halloween with this spirited fizzer. This bath bomb with its color-changing, magical properties brings bursts of oranges and pinks to your bath, while the citrus scent lifts your spirits.

DEMON IN DARK LUSH Cosmetics Halloween

Demon in the Dark Soap ($7.95/ 100g) –  I first experienced this soap when my husband picked it up for me for our anniversary.  This soap is wrapped in a layer of black wax, to prevent the demon-cleansing properties from escaping.   So, make sure you peel off the wax before you use it, or else, you won’t experience any of this soaps cleaning properties.  Peeling off the wax reveals a forest green cleanser to suds up dirt-demons.  Demon in the Dark is made with fresh mint (perfumed with peppermint and spearmint) and antioxidant-rich fresh organic apple juice to leave your skin brighter and cleaner.

New LUSH Cosmetics Halloween Specials Haunting the Web

Twilight Shower Gel ($29.95/500 ml) – This shower gel is launching just in time for Halloween, deemed the spookiest night of the year.  Too frightened to sleep?  Let this twinkly,  soothing, relaxing, deep purple, lavender-laden shower gel lull you into a nightmare-free rest.  It contains a blend of deeply relaxing essential oils such as lavender flower infusion, lavender oil and ylang ylang.

Witches Ball Bubble Bar ($8.45)  – Halloween brings on the darkness, including the weather, which at times makes it harder to keep up your spirits.  LUSH Cosmetics has created a spell of herbal bubbles to help you feel like yourself again; full of reviving peppermint, rosemary and sage oils, your spirits will be lifted, and you’ll be floating on cloud 9  in no-time.

Will you be tricking or treating with these new LUSH Cosmetics goodies this Halloween?

Review: The Best Eye Shadow Primer – Stila Prime Pot

Stila Prime Pot Caramel 2

For the last few months, I’ve used the Stila Prime Pot in Caramel to prime my eye lids before applying my eye shadow.  Before that, I was using everyone’s HG eye lid primer, Urban Decay Primer Potion.  I love trying new things, so I used my Stila Pro discount to purchase the Stila Prime Pot.  Ever since, it has been a staple for me, and I also use it in my professional makeup kit.

Description:

The Stila Prime Pot is a waterproof eye shadow primer that promises flawless, crease-less eye shadow wear. A revolutionary polymer adheres to eye shadow and allows for shadow to wear all day and night.
This innovative waterproof formula is crease resistant and extends eye shadow wear all day.  Prime Pot also creates flawlessly smooth lids and keeps excess oil at bay.  It is available in two shades, Toffee (lighter skin tones) and Caramel (darker skin tones).

Stila Prime Pot Caramel

My Thoughts:

The Stila Prime Pot is a little different than any of the other primers I’ve tried, in that it is in a pot, and the consistency is different; it’s thicker.  You definitely do not need a lot of this primer when using it.  Use a concealer brush or your fingers, whichever works best for you, just don’t use too much or else it will look cakey.

If I didn’t love it, I wouldn’t use it every single time I apply my eye shadow.  I have oily lids, so there are times I’d have some creasing by the end of the day due to the oil on my lids, but with the Stila Prime Pot I do not have that issue.

As mentioned previously, I have the Stila Prime Pot in the caramel shade, I’ve used it with eye shadow or alone, and it has looked fine both ways.  I experienced no creasing of my eye shadow, my eye shadow stayed true to color, lasted over 12-hours, and blended easily.  I love that it is waterproof, which makes it great to have to use for brides.

The Stila Prime Pot is actually the best primer I’ve ever tried, and I’m definitely re-purchasing this primer whenever it runs out.

Cost:  $20.00/ .14 oz
