Review: My Brazilian Experience at Vada Spa NYC

Warning: This may include some TMI

If you know me and/or have frequented my blog, you’ll know that I get brazilian’s frequently from one place & one waxer, Karmjeet at Shobha threading. (CLICK HERE for referenced post)

I’m going to give you a little background information first.  I started seeing Karmjeet at Shobah’s SoHo location, until she moved to Mid-town sometime last year.  Being a loyal client, I followed her there, and continued getting waxes from her.  I work & live in Brooklyn, and trooping to Mid-town for a 5-7 minute session, just didn’t seem worth it anymore; therefore, I began to look for a place as comparable to Shobha.

One of my best friends who has gone to Shobha before told me about this place, Vada Spa.  She said they were clean, cheaper, and they didn’t double dip.  All bonuses in my book.   I also heard about Vada Spa via lifebooker.com since they had a MINX nail promotion featuring Vada Spa, in which I purchased a ticket for.  Anyway, I ended up going to Vada this past Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

I was greeted by Kate, who offered me a choice of Chardonnay or Merlot to relax.   I arrived 15 minutes early, so I had to wait for my appointment time, which was 6:00 pm. I didn’t mind.  At 6pm, my waxer, Lara came to get me, and I was taken into a private room where there was just a stand with two containers of wax on the heaters which were wrapped in foil (why? I don’t know), and the waxing table.  I was nervous because I saw no gloves, no spatulas, nothing.

Lara came back after I was undressed, and put some gloves on (they were ina drawer lol).  She then proceeded to wipe me down then add baby powder to absorb excess moisture and/or oil.  She asked if this was my 1st time, and I of course said no.  Even still, she treated me as if it were my first time.  This was cool in my opinion since after 5 weeks of not being waxed, you forget the feeling, so it’s almost like your first time all over again. Lara was quick & gentle. She made sure she got EVERY SINGLE HAIR possible!  Seriously… lol I was cracking up on the inside.  It was all over in a matter of 10 minutes, and she ended the session by saying “That’s it baby you have no hair.”   I also remember her asking me if I got laser because I was virtually hairless.  I am though, and I don’t even shave.

Overall, I had an excellent experience at Vada Spa .  I will definitely be back. Plus, it saves me a couple of bucks.  It really does beat paying $57 for a brazilian.

UPDATE: I am changing my review.  After getting waxed here, I suffered serious ingrowns.  More ingrowns than I’ve ever had before in my life.  This is what I get for “cheating” on Karmjeet at Shobha.   My boyfriend even said, “Yeah babe, don’t ever go back to them again.”

Do you get waxed? If so, what were your experiences like?

Review: Jane Carter Solution Shampoo & Conditioner

This past March I went to the International Beauty Show, which I reviewed in this post.   At the International Beauty Show, I was able to pick up several Jane Carter Solutions Hair Products, which are listed below:

1. Moisture Nourishing Shampoo $5 (reg $8)
2. Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner $5 (reg $14)
3. Scalp Nourishing Serum $10 (reg $14)

Prior to purchasing the above products, I was already using the Wrapping lotion and Scalp Nourishing Serum. Well, at my salon that’s what they used to wrap my hair with, and I always loved how it left my hair feeling soft & light weight unlike other wrapping lotions/mousse’s I’ve used in the past.  The Scalp Nourishing Serum I started using to help grow a patch of hair back that fell out for some reason, and it worked.

Moisture Nourishing Shampoo: This shampoo gently cleanses your hair and scalp, restoring your hair’s proper moisture balance. Moisture Nourishing Shampoo is a natural based shampoo with extracts of Coltsfoot, Lemon Balm, and Myrrh. This unique combination infuses moisture into your hair, leaving it incredibly shiny and bouncy. It is also gentle enough for everyday use, and smells terrific! Its paraben free (source).

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Certified Organic Aloe Vera, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Glucoside, Cocoamidopropyl Betaine, PolyQuaterium 7, Glycol Stearate, Glycerin, Wheat Protein, Wheat Amino Acids, Tocopherol, Lecithin, Panthenol, Caprylic Acid, Glycine, Potassium Sorbate, ,Citric Acid (source).

My thoughts:  I love this shampoo.  It’s concentrated, so you only need very little; you definitely get your money’s worth.  The lather is thick & creamy even.  The scent is a nice, mild citrus.  It gets my hair clean without it having that stripped dry feeling.   It’s great for vegan’s & people who are into natural products.  I wish I had bought more than one of these.

Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner: This product does just what is says…it replenishes. It works especially well when used with heat, leaving your hair in better condition than ever before. There is nothing better than soft, shiny, healthy hair. Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner contains ingredients that permanently bond to your hair’s cortex, leaving it stronger and with better elasticity. Once in awhile, you come across a product that is truly “the best,” and this conditioner is certainly one of those rare commodities (source)!

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth 20, Extracts of: Green Tea, Sage, Rosemary, Basil, Mullein, Licorice, Thyme, and Vanilla, Certified Organic: Sunflower Oil, Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil, Lavender Oil, Lemon Oil, Wheat Protein, Wheat Amino Acids, Tocopherol, Lecithin, Panthenol, Caprylic Acid, Glycine, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid (source).

My Thoughts:  This combined with the use of the shampoo, leaves my hair super soft.  It’s conditions, moisturizes, and has amazing detangling abilities on our relaxed hair.  Sometimes, I use this along with my Queen Helene Super Cholesterol if I want to super treat my hair. Even though I have a short haircut now, my hair is healthier.  I have less breakage, and less split ends.  I also love the scent of this too. It smells nice, and it isn’t over powering.

Updates: New Tutorials & Product Reviews

Over the last few days, I did several youtube video’s.  They are as follows:

Rihanna’s  Look on the cover of NME Magazine  – On the cover of NME Magazine, Rihanna had  a semi-nude eye with a pop of blue eyeshadow on the outer third of her lid.  Her lips were a nice pink. She had some berry-ish contouring on her cheeks as well.

Eve Pearl Foundation, Salmon Concealer, and Dual Pressed Powder Tutorial/Review.  I apply all of the above mentioned Eve Pearl products and provide my thoughts on it.  Overall, I think the products are good; the concealer is very creamy & provides great coverage, as does the foundation.  The foundation did have a crayon-like smell to it at first. This product is definitely not for beginners since it takes some skill to find your right color by mixing each color together.

How I Prep my Oily Skin for Foundation Application (applying MUFE’s HD Foundation in #173 & #177). CLICK HERE for tutorial.  I did a post about this a few weeks ago (CLICK HERE) to read it.

Spring/Summer Makeup Tutorial: Neutral Look with a POP of Orange – (CLICK HERE) for tutorial.  Many of you asked to see more neutral (wearable looks). This look I created is perfect for spring or summer.  It also gives the impression of a tan or bronzish glow.   I also showed you what the Orange NYX Blush with MAC’s format & Golden Bronze Iridescent Powder looks like.
